This is a familiar sight at Berneray hostel gate in the mornings!
Visitors to the lovely spot painted here will recognise this familiar sight if sleeping in the so-called ‘honeymoon’ bunkroom at Berneray Hostel, as a two-second moonlight walk is likely to be involved…no problem!
The Outer Hebrides are deservedly a popular holiday destination . Countless aspiring artists will, like me, rush to buy themselves some materials and I’ve posted a link here to an excellent find which is a most valuable source when I’m in North Wales, for example, when finding themselves with magnificent surroundings such as these. But be warned – tiny island shops such as this one will usually be able to cater for the traveller’s basic needs, but the occasional painter would be well advised to equip themselves with a small sketchkit in advance if he/she is not going to be consumed with frustration! Their very remoteness and wildness are the main attractions of these islands, so one can hardly expect an ‘all singing and all dancing ‘ art store to be situated around the next corner! However, I was pleasantly surprised when on my last visit and needing to produce some canvases on request at short notice, to find that there are in fact some companies who are able to suitably supply the artist at reasonable cost , even to the Highlands and Islands !
